Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron of La Brède and of Montesquieu (1689-1755), was born in La Brède in the family chateau.
He became Baron of La Brède through his parents, but his title as Baron of Montesquieu was inherited from his uncle.
Although this great personage concentrated on literature and philosophic and political reflection, Montesquieu was also interested in medicine and science. He thus improved the quality of his grape varieties and wines which he shipped to Paris and to the vast British Empire.
